Apple is not going to upgrade the hardware of its Apple TV next week but will update the software, according to a new report from AllThingsD. An earlier report from Panjiva suggested that based on shipping activity Apple could unveil updated hardware.
Sources said that one new feature in the works will let people who’ve bought content from Apple play that stuff on other users’ Apple TVs, via Apple’s Airplay system and Apple’s server. So if you bought a TV show or movie from Apple’s iTunes store, you could watch it at a friend’s house by calling it up on your iPhone and telling your friend’s Apple TV to start streaming it. (The files wouldn’t need to be stored on your iPhone or iPad)
Notably, Apple has been fairly active of late with Apple TV updates. Just recently a software update brought five new apps: Vevo, Disney Channel, Disney XD, The Weather Channel, and Smithsonian Channel.
It’s likely that Apple will announce any changes to the Apple TV at its September 10th press event.
